Education is a ‘public good’ and every student that is academically able, but financially needy, needs to be provided with an opportunity either at a university or Further Education Training (FET) college to fully realize their academic potential.

The establishment of the NSFAS in 1999 was an acknowledgement that government was committed to widening access to higher education to eligible students who would not be able to study further without financial aid.

In 1999 government established NSFAS by an Act of Parliament to provide for the granting of loans and bursaries to eligible students. Parliament recently amended the Act to include Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges.

The South African Government initially committed itself to a comprehensive financial aid scheme in 1996 when it asked th Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA) to manage funds set aside for such a scheme, TEFSA was converted into a statutory body the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), in 2000.

NSFAS Road Show reaches poor learners

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) launched a Road Show in the Western Cape in February 2011 which provided an ideal opportunity to talk to vulnerable learners from some of the poorest schools in the province about the importance of further education.
